Our Summer Medical Institute Team

Medical Campus Outreach is an organization I partner with to reach the people on the streets of north and west Philadelphia. We typically meet quarterly and our team of doctors, nurses, and medical students (with a pre-med student here or there) is divided up into smaller groups to go door to door providing medical screenings, neuropathy, and HIV testing. We also deliver free information on common health problems and self management. Our work provides an opportunity for people normally unable to reach healthcare to interact with medical professionals and learn about previously undiagnosed problems.

Every Summer, MCO hosts a Summer Medical Institute for medical students, nursing students, and pre-med students. Outreach is similar, door-to-door, but the team stays in the city for three weeks, learning from volunteer doctors and professors during lectures. I joined the team as an exception, but was able to work hard alongside my teammates as a Spanish translator and medical professional. The people we met were incredibly grateful just to know that we cared for them and wanted to help them. It was an unforgettable experience.
